Super 8 is a silent movie.

When my grandfather died shortly after my wedding, we sat down and rewatched every “home movie” he had ever taken. He had considered himself an “amateur photographer” (we credit him with our family’s infamous “Just one more shot!” line that we all use), but as always, it wasn’t until his death that we understood how valuable his work had been. We still have that 30 pound projector, and once in awhile we still pull out those reels and watch them together. I decided to pick up the mantle, and I have been shooting Super 8 video since 2014.

Now, I get to share that magic with you.

Super 8 film is extra special for those first childhood milestones. As a mother myself, shooting super 8 of my own kids since they were born, there is something that hits you deep inside when all sound and even color have been removed. Suddenly, your child’s Childhood looks and feels like those of your ancestors and (for me) this makes the whole crazy cycle of life feel like a living memory we all share.

Grace & Jake: A Backyard Wedding

Super 8 video fits a backyard wedding like peanut butter to jelly. It’s iconic. It’s timeless. It just WORKS.

Grace and Jake have a wonderful story with two kids and a beautiful house together, so when they asked me to photograph their laid back elopement style wedding I KNEW I had to bring along my Super 8 Camera.

Because Super 8 has a timeless look, it works with every wedding. But for me, that “home video style” of shooting with camera shake, short cuts, and wonky perspectives always fits a wedding that isn’t trying to be prim & Proper in the first place.

What ever happened to “home videos”?

Nostalgia is a part of my DNA. I have been taking home videos for my entire life. Before that, my father took home videos. Before that, His Father took home videos.

I can’t help but wonder what is the future of this term. Certainly, the phone has replaced all additional devices that parents used to lug around, but the separation of equipment has always been a part of the process for me.

When I shoot Super 8, it’s loud. The kids all know that I’m using a special magic box, and they all want to know what in the world is going on. They become curious. They learn they must wait for the results. It all creates an experience that we have lost, but thankfully, I am really trying to bring back- not just for my kids- but for yours, too.
