The physicality of time passing is always best represented through children. We all reach a point where our size, shape, and general facial structure levels off and our identities become recognizable. I’m on the cusp of that now, as my belly grows a little bigger each week so does the baby inside of me, and I can’t help but wonder if I grew a nose or fingers today, and how rapidly all of those parts need to grow over the next few months before my baby is ready to breathe life outside of my body. And so it blows my mind that all of this physical change, everything that happens to both mother and child, is just the beginning of so many more years of growth before that child becomes the adult that the world will remember. It all starts on their birth day. The day that we get our first glimpse of their physical features. It’s every new parent’s joy to count those fingers and toes, to search for birth marks, to comment on how the nose or eyes may compare to siblings and family. They want to learn all they can about their child, and while they know that in a week or a month or a year this tiny human will continue to grow and change they also want to capture this very moment and freeze it in their memory for all time.
I have the honor of doing just that, memorializing a moment mid-transition. I know that it’s precious and I know that it is appreciated. Sarah and Brian: thank you again for welcoming me into the hard moments and the joyful moments. From that middle-of-the-night phone call to bringing Elliana home just hours after her birth, it was the greatest whirlwind of a day, and I am so grateful to have these gorgeous images to show for our time together. Enjoy them and enjoy her, she will continue to change before your very eyes.
